EN 1398

Dock Levellers – Safety Requirements

The harmonised EU standard specifying safety requirements for the design, construction, installation, maintenance and testing of dock levelers and their safety components. It underpins CE marking of levelers in the Machinery Directive context, and is the leveler-specific report EU EPC buyers and distributors will request.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(k)

Trailer Securement at the Dock (US)

US dock/forklift regulation covering truck and trailer securement during loading. OSHA permits “mechanical means” giving protection equivalent to wheel chocks – so an automatic vehicle restraint can substitute for chocks. Clauses (k)(1) and (m)(7) are the basis for positioning restraints and chocks as the dock’s safety answer.

How to Specify a Loading Dock System

Size the dock pit to the leveler

Confirm the platform width × length you need (commonly 2,000×2,000 mm or 2,500×2,000 mm) and we provide the matching pit-recess dimensions and a technical drawing. Typical recesses run ≈ 2,080-2,580 mm long × 2,040 mm wide × 600 mm deep – but always build to the drawing issued for your unit, not a generic figure.

Match capacity to the forklift, not the load

Rate the leveler to the forklift’s rated load plus its dynamic axle load – a 2.5-3 t forklift imposes a far higher point load than its static weight. Common EU pit levelers are ≈ 6 t nominal and ≈ 10 t for heavy duty; tell us your heaviest loaded forklift and we size accordingly.

Choose the lip type

Hinged (open) lip for standard docks; telescopic (sliding) lip where you need a precise bridge into the trailer bed – the preferred choice for cold storage and high-throughput docks. Confirm lip length against your typical truck bed depths.

Pick the seal or shelter for your climate

Compression-foam seal for uniform trailer heights at lowest cost; retractable shelter for mixed trailer heights and building-face protection; inflatable shelter for cold storage and climate-controlled docks where minimising air exchange is the priority. Add an under-leveler seal to close the gap beneath the leveler.

Specify trailer securement to OSHA

For North-American sites, decide between wheel chocks and an automatic vehicle restraint. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(k) accepts mechanical means equivalent to chocks, so a hook-style restraint engaging the ICC/RUPG bar satisfies the rule and can interlock with the door and traffic lights.

Confirm power, surface & documentation

Dock seal vs dock shelter – which is right for cold storage?

A compression-foam dock seal gives the tightest seal on uniform trailer heights at the lowest cost. A retractable shelter accommodates varying trailer heights and protects the building face. For cold storage and climate-controlled docks, an inflatable shelter – whose air bags inflate around the trailer – is preferred because it minimises air exchange; pair it with an insulated vertical-lift dock door and an under-leveler seal to stop cold-air spillage and frost.

Do I need an automatic vehicle restraint or are wheel chocks enough?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(k) requires trailers to be secured at the dock and accepts mechanical means that give protection equivalent to wheel chocks. An automatic hook-style restraint engaging the trailer’s rear impact guard (ICC/RUPG bar) satisfies that rule, reduces trailer-creep and early-departure risk, and can integrate with door and traffic-light interlocks. Wheel chocks remain a valid baseline protection.

What is the lead time and warranty?

Sample 7-15 days; standard container 12-20 days; custom first order 20-35 days and repeat orders 15-20 days. Warranty is 2 years on the door body, 3 years on the operator/motor and 5 years on the servo motor, with free spare parts within warranty shipped DHL/FedEx in 5-7 days. Tooling records are archived up to 5 years with no extra tooling fee for repeat orders.

Do you install the dock equipment on site?

No. RAX is a pure manufacturer and does not provide on-site installation. Every order ships with English installation manuals, pit-recess and installation drawings, and wiring diagrams so your local team can install confidently. We support FOB Tianjin/Qingdao with FCL and LCL shipping.
