A controlled atmosphere room slows ripening by holding a precise low-oxygen, high-carbon-dioxide mix around the fruit. That mix is expensive to generate and easy to lose — so the door must be as gas-tight as it is insulated. This door seals the atmosphere in, holds the temperature steady, and equalizes pressure safely, built to your opening from prototype to full production runs.

01 · Overview

Why a CA Room Needs a Special Door

One idea: a normal cold room door keeps heat out, but a CA door must also keep a carefully engineered gas mix in. Any leak lets oxygen back in, restarts ripening and wastes the cost of running the CA generator.

Controlled atmosphere storage extends the shelf life of apples, pears and other produce by lowering oxygen and raising carbon dioxide around the fruit, which dramatically slows respiration and ripening. The whole room is a sealed envelope, and the door is its largest movable joint. If that joint leaks, the room cannot hold its target atmosphere and the generator runs constantly to compensate.

RAX builds the CA door with a continuous compressible gasket designed for gas-tightness, an insulated PU panel to hold the chilled temperature, and provision for a pressure-equalization device so the door is not loaded by the small pressure swings that CA rooms experience as temperature and gas levels change. Airtightness target, panel thickness and the final thermal figure are confirmed on your specification, and every unit is made to order from a single door, in any size and any RAL colour.

CA storage gas levels and temperature bands are industry-typical ranges for fruit storage; RAX confirms the airtightness target and rating for your room per project. The U-value is stated as a “down to” marketing reference for the insulated panel, not a tested door-set figure. RAX products are validated from −30 °C cold storage to +50 °C desert conditions.

What makes a CA door different from a normal cold room door?

A normal cold room door mainly keeps heat out. A CA door must also keep a precise low-oxygen, high-carbon-dioxide gas mix in, because that mix is what slows ripening. So a CA door is built around a continuous gas-tight gasket and multi-point cam hardware that compresses the seal evenly all round, not just an insulating panel.

How airtight is the door?

Airtightness is set by your room’s leak-rate or half-life target, which depends on the CA system and the crop. We engineer the gasket and closing gear to that target and confirm it per project on the technical layout. If you need a certified airtightness figure for tender, we arrange third-party test data against the matching standard.

Why does a CA door need pressure equalization?

CA rooms experience small pressure swings as temperature changes and as the nitrogen generator or oxygen scrubber runs. Without a pressure-relief or equalization device, those swings push and pull on the door leaf, stressing the gasket and creating leaks. We provide for a pressure-equalization device so the seal is not loaded by these normal room-pressure changes.

Is the door insulated as well as gas-tight?

Yes. The door carries a 100, 150 or 200 mm high-density PU foam panel matched to the chilled room temperature (typically 0–5 °C for fruit), so it holds both the atmosphere and the temperature. The U-value is stated as a “down to” marketing reference for the panel; RAX confirms the thermal performance for your room per project.

Which certifications do you hold for this door?

What is the lead time and warranty?

Sample orders run 7–15 days, a standard container 12–20 days, and a custom first order 20–35 days (repeat custom orders 15–20 days). FOB ports are Tianjin and Qingdao; FCL and LCL are both supported. The door body is warranted for 2 years and the operator/motor for 3 years (servo motor 5 years), with free spare parts shipped by DHL/FedEx within warranty.
