Who We Build For

Door Operators Built for Door OEMs & Smart-Building Integrators

An operator is only as good as its match to the door. The wrong torque-to-weight pairing, an incompatible control board, or a drive that cannot hold its duty cycle will generate warranty calls long after the container ships. RAX manufactures the door, the operator and the control electronics under one roof – so the motor, the limit setting and the safety inputs are engineered as a system, validated to 100,000 cycles, and shipped with wiring diagrams and CAD for your team to integrate.

Pain: torque/weight match & batch consistency

How Operators Are Sized – Technical Specification Ranges

Operators are selected by the load they must move and how often they must move it. The ranges below are typical industry selection values – drawn from published Western catalogues and standards – to help you frame your specification. RAX confirms the exact torque, lifting force, voltage, IP rating and duty cycle for your door on the engineering proposal.

Garage / sectional lifting forceTypically ~600 N (light residential) to ~1200 N (heavy / industrial). For reference, Nice specifies its Spider garage operator at 800-1200 N with built-in WiFi and brushless technology.
Sliding gate – max gate weightSelected by weight class, commonly ~400 kg up to 2500 kg and above. Nice segments its sliding range into “Up to 400 kg”, “400-600 kg”, “600-1000 kg” and “Over 1000 kg” classes.
Swing gate / door – rating basisRated by leaf length and weight rather than force; light-to-heavy leaf families exist for residential through estate and industrial leaves.
Tubular motor torqueFrom ~6 Nm (internal blinds / light screens – e.g. Somfy Sonesse 40 RTS at 6 Nm / 20 rpm) up to ~300 Nm and above for heavy 92 mm industrial shutter motors.
Tubular motor tube diameterCommonly 35 mm / 45 mm for light-medium shutters and 59 mm / 92 mm for heavy industrial curtains (industry convention).
Motor voltage230 V AC mains for heavy / industrial drives; 24 V DC for intensive-use, battery/solar and residential safety applications. RAX operators use DC24V servo drive.
IP ratingIP44 is common for indoor tubular and gate operators; IP65 for external or exposed installations (industry convention – verify per model).
Duty cycleResidential intermittent (short-time S2/S3) versus industrial intensive (high-percentage S3, or continuous with servo VFD drive).
Limit settingMechanical limit (standard) versus electronic / radio limit (premium, faster commissioning).
Operating temperatureTypically ~ −20 °C to +60 °C standard; cold-storage variants run lower. RAX systems are tested from −30 °C cold storage to +50 °C desert.
Smart controlWiFi, Bluetooth, RS485 bus and 433 / 868 MHz RF remote. RAX supplies WiFi / RS485 remote control (Industry 4.0 Ready).
Safety inputsEN 12453 force limits, anti-pinch safety edge, photocell / light curtain, bottom air-bag sensor; soft start/stop standard on DC / brushless and servo drives.
RAX special variantsExplosion-proof motor (Ex d IIB T4); fire-door fail-safe operation (EI60 / EI120); radar / geomagnetic / light-curtain sensing.

Integrity note: figures marked as industry convention or attributed to named manufacturers (Nice, Somfy) are published market benchmarks, not RAX certified specifications. RAX’s own per-model torque, force, IP and duty-cycle values are confirmed against your door weight, size and cycle rate on the proposal. RAX-claimable facts: DC24V servo drive, WiFi/RS485, explosion-proof Ex d IIB T4, fire rating EI60/EI120, anti-pinch safety edge, bottom air-bag sensor, 100,000-cycle fatigue validation, and 3-year operator / 5-year servo warranty.

Compliance

Applicable Standards for Powered Doors & Operators

A powered door system is not compliant on the operator alone. In the CE framework the operator is validated for safe forces within a complete door system, with protective safety devices tested separately. Understanding how these standards interlock is the fastest way to evaluate any supplier. RAX states CE marking to EN 13241 (door system) and EN 12453 (operator safety).

EN 12453:2017 (+A1:2021)

Safety in Use of Power Operated Doors

Sets the safety-use requirements and test methods for powered doors, gates and barriers where people can reach them – including the safe force limits (dynamic and static) that protect against crushing, shearing and drawing-in. It covers the full lifecycle (delivery, installation, use, deactivation, disposal) and is the core operator-safety standard. RAX operators carry CE to EN 12453.

EN / IEC 60335-2-95:2023

Residential Garage-Door Drives

The particular safety standard for drives moving residential garage doors vertically, with rated voltage not exceeding 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for others; DC and battery units are included, as are the entrapment-protection devices used with such drives. Essential documentation for any residential garage door opener sold into Europe.

EN 13241:2003 (+A2:2016)

Product Standard – Performance Characteristics

The umbrella product standard for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates. For powered doors it requires protection against crushing, shearing and drawing-in, safe force levels, controlled stopping and EMC limits, plus mechanical strength, durability, wind-load resistance, thermal resistance and air leakage. Conformity is by type testing plus factory production control. RAX is CE marked to EN 13241.

EN 12604:2021

Mechanical Aspects – Test Methods

Supplies the referenced mechanical test methods and criteria (strength, durability/cycling, mechanical safety including finger-pinch and spring/cable safety) that the door an operator drives must satisfy to demonstrate EN 13241 compliance. ICS 91.060.50.

EN 12978

Protective Safety Devices

Referenced by EN 13241 for the design and testing of protective safety devices – safety edges, light curtains and contact strips. This is the standard your safety edge and photocell must meet so the operator’s force limits and reversal logic work as a validated system.

AS/NZS 4505 & UL

Australia & North America

Counterpart regional requirements. RAX can support AS/NZS 4505 (Australia) and UL (North America) counterpart test data for projects that need local-market conformity evidence alongside the CE documentation.

Practical CE message for buyers: a powered door needs the operator validated to EN 12453 (forces/safety) and – for residential drives – EN 60335-2-95, within an EN 13241 door system, with protective devices to EN 12978 and mechanical aspects to EN 12604. RAX ships a CE Declaration of Conformity plus EN 13241 test report with every order.

Buyer Guide

How to Specify a Door Operator

Six steps take you from a door drawing to a correctly sized, compliant operator. Send us these parameters and our engineers return a proposal with torque/force sizing, voltage recommendation and CAD layout.

Define the door / gate type and motion

Sectional overhead, roller shutter, sliding, swing, jackshaft-on-torsion-bar, fire or elevator. The motion determines the operator family – ceiling-rail trolley, shaft-mounted, tubular in-shaft, rack-and-pinion or articulated arm.

Size to the load – weight and size to torque / force

Garage and sectional drives are sized by lifting force in Newtons against door area and weight (~600-1200 N typical). Sliding gates are sized by gate weight (400 kg to 2500 kg+ classes). Tubular motors are sized by torque (Nm) at the shaft – a function of curtain weight and drum radius. Undersizing causes stall and overheating; oversizing wastes cost and can defeat safety-force tuning.

Set the duty cycle

Residential intermittent use needs only a short-time rating; an intensive industrial or logistics door needs a high-percentage S3 duty cycle or a continuous servo VFD drive. Match the cycles-per-hour to the motor’s thermal limit so it does not throttle under load.

Choose the voltage

230 V AC mains suits heavy and industrial drives; 24 V DC suits intensive-use, battery/solar backup and residential safety (lower-voltage circuits simplify safe installation). RAX operators use 24 V DC servo drive for smooth, controllable operation.

Select the control protocol & sensors

Decide on RF remote (433/868 MHz), WiFi/Bluetooth, or RS485 bus for building-management integration, and specify activation sensors – radar, geomagnetic loop, light curtain – plus safety inputs (safety edge, photocell, bottom air-bag).

Confirm safety & standards compliance

Require EN 12453 force-limit validation, EN 60335-2-95 for residential drives, protective devices to EN 12978, and the CE Declaration of Conformity within an EN 13241 door system. RAX supplies CE DoC, EN 13241 report, wiring diagrams, CAD and the Factory Inspection Report.
