A tubular motor with manual override adds an integrated clutch or hand-crank mechanism to the standard tubular motor, allowing the shutter or roller door to be operated by hand when mains power is unavailable. This is a critical safety feature in applications such as fire exits, cold-storage rooms, emergency access points and any installation where a locked-in shutter during a power cut creates a life-safety or operational hazard. The override mechanism is typically a worm-gear clutch that disengages the motor from the tube, letting a hand crank or pull-chain move the shutter manually [ESTIMATE — industry-typical design].
The market for manual-override tubular motors is narrower than standard tubular motors (see our Roller Shutter Tubular Motor range) because the override adds cost and mechanical complexity. European competitors such as Somfy and Dooya offer override variants primarily for the residential and light-commercial segment, while industrial override motors — with higher torque ratings and heavy-duty clutch mechanisms — remain a specialist niche. RAX Door Technology manufactures manual-override tubular motors on an in-house servo motor assembly line, with the same torque range (6 Nm to 300+ Nm) and tube diameters (35/45/59/92 mm) as our standard range, plus the integrated override clutch — all tested to 100,000 cycles in our fatigue lab and CE-certified to EN 13241 and EN 12453.
Worm-gear clutch disengages the motor from the tube for hand-crank operation during power failures — no separate bypass mechanism needed, no voiding of the warranty seal.
We size output torque to shutter weight, width and height instead of selling a one-size motor — send the shutter datasheet and we calculate the match, including override torque margin.
Manual override satisfies fire-exit and emergency-access requirements where powered-only operation is unacceptable — critical for cold-storage, fire-rated and evacuation-route doors.
ISO 9001:2015 and CE to EN 13241 / EN 12453, with SGS material reports; AS/NZS 4505 and UL counterpart test data can be supported. Shipped with wiring diagrams and English manuals.

A tubular motor with manual override is a standard roller-shutter tubular motor that includes an integrated clutch mechanism (typically worm-gear). When mains power is available, the motor drives the shutter electrically. When power fails, the clutch disengages the motor from the tube, allowing the shutter to be raised or lowered by hand using a crank or pull-chain. This is essential for fire exits, cold-storage rooms and any door where a power cut must not trap people or block emergency access.
The override clutch uses a worm-gear mechanism that normally locks the motor output to the tube. To switch to manual mode, a release lever or knob is turned (or a pull-chain is engaged), which disengages the worm gear from the drive train. The motor is then mechanically decoupled from the tube, and the shutter can be moved by hand. When power returns and the release is reset, the clutch re-engages automatically for electric operation.
Manual override is required or strongly recommended in: (1) fire-exit doors where powered operation alone could trap occupants during a blackout; (2) cold-storage and freezer rooms where a power cut must not seal personnel inside; (3) emergency access points in industrial facilities; (4) any installation where local building codes mandate manual operation capability for powered shutters. Check your local fire and building regulations.
In most cases, the override clutch is integrated into the motor housing at the factory and cannot be retrofitted to a standard tubular motor already in the field. If you need override capability, specify it at the order stage so we supply the motor with the clutch pre-installed and tested. For existing installations without override, a separate external bypass device or battery backup system may be an alternative — contact our engineers to discuss options.
RAX holds ISO 9001:2015 and CE to EN 13241 (industrial door) and EN 12453 (operator safety), with SGS material reports and product liability insurance. The manual override mechanism is tested as part of the complete motor assembly. For residential shutter applications, the relevant safety standard is EN/IEC 60335-2-95; AS/NZS 4505 (Australia) and UL (North America) counterpart test data can also be supported.
Sample 7–15 days; standard container 12–20 days; custom first order 20–35 days (repeat 15–20). Operator/motor warranty is 3 years (servo motor 5 years), with free spare parts dispatched by DHL/FedEx within warranty (5–7 days). The override clutch is covered under the same warranty as the motor assembly.
