Smoke & Fire Curtain

Also searched as active fire curtain barrier, smoke curtain and ceiling-concealed fire curtain.

A concealed curtain that deploys from a ceiling headbox to channel smoke and close off fire on alarm — keeping open-plan architecture open until the moment it must protect it. Reinforced fabric, gravity fail-safe descent, fire class engineered per project.

01 · Overview

Why Buyers Specify This Door

One idea: protect a wide, open space without building a wall or hanging a visible door. The curtain hides in the ceiling and only appears when the fire system calls for it.

Atria, escalators, open offices and retail floors are designed to feel open — but fire and smoke still have to be compartmented. An active smoke and fire curtain solves this: a reinforced fabric barrier rolls down from a concealed headbox on a fire-alarm signal, creating a vertical barrier that channels smoke toward exhaust points and closes the opening, then stays out of sight the rest of the time.

RAX manufactures each curtain to your opening, with gravity fail-safe descent as standard so the barrier deploys even on a total power loss. The required performance — smoke containment, fire integrity, or full insulation — is engineered and confirmed per project against the matching test standard for your configuration, rather than sold as a standing certificate.

Fire and smoke performance (E / EW / EI class and smoke-Containment duty) is a per-project manufacturing capability confirmed against the matching test standard for your configuration; it is not a held stock certificate. Cycle life of 100,000 cycles is validated in the RAX fatigue test lab.

What is the difference between a smoke curtain and a fire curtain?

A smoke curtain primarily contains cold smoke at ambient temperature, channelling it toward extraction points and protecting escape routes. A fire curtain additionally resists fire and radiant heat, carrying an integrity (E / EW) or insulated (EI) class. RAX manufactures both behaviours and recommends the right configuration based on whether your project needs smoke containment, fire integrity, or full insulation.

What happens to the curtain if power is lost?

The curtain uses gravity fail-safe descent as standard: it deploys automatically on a fire-alarm signal or on power loss, with no manual intervention. An optional battery or UPS backup provides a controlled descent where a gravity-only drop is not suitable. This is the core life-safety behaviour expected of an active fire curtain barrier.

Can it integrate with our existing fire-alarm system?

Yes. The control panel interfaces with standard fire-alarm panels, smoke detectors and building management systems. It is pre-wired and function-tested before dispatch, with wiring diagrams included in the document set. Optional RS485 communication adds remote status feedback and monitoring.

Can you build it to my exact opening size?

Yes. Every curtain is engineered to your clear opening width and height, or from site photos. Every order is custom-manufactured, so you can buy a single curtain built to a non-standard size, with RAL colour-matched headbox and guides. Our engineers confirm the feasible span and produce a technical proposal for approval before production.

Which certifications do you hold for this curtain?

RAX holds ISO 9001:2015, CE marking against EN 13241 (industrial door product standard) and EN 12453 (operator safety), plus SGS material reports and Product Liability Insurance. The fire and smoke class and AS/NZS 4505 / UL counterpart test data are arranged per project, not held as standing certificates.

What is the lead time?

Sample orders run 7–15 days, a standard container 12–20 days, and a custom first order 20–35 days (repeat custom orders 15–20 days). FOB ports are Tianjin and Qingdao; FCL and LCL are both supported.

What documents ship with the curtain?

Every order includes wiring diagrams, an English installation manual, FAI first-article confirmation and pre-assembly photos, a factory inspection report (speed, noise, insulation resistance, visual), the 100,000-cycle fatigue test video/report, and the CE Declaration of Conformity with the EN 13241 test report.
