A 0.8 mm skin carries roughly 6.3 kilos of steel per square metre, while a 1.5 mm skin carries about 11.8. Compare doors from the same family, for the same opening size, using the quoted weight in writing. Then divide the price by the weight and compare those figures instead of the quotations.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the worked case. Take a roller shutter door for a 3.0 by 3.5 metre opening, which gives 10.5 square metres of curtain. At a 0.8 mm galvanized skin, steel density of 7850 kg\/m\u00b3 works out to 7850 times 0.0008, or 6.28 kg\/m\u00b2. The whole curtain holds about 66 kilos of steel. The same door built at 1.5 mm holds 7850 times 0.0015, about 11.8 kg\/m\u00b2, so roughly 124 kilos.<\/p>\n<p>At an equal selling price, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raxdoors.com\/blog\/industrial-door-cost-guide\/\">the heavier door costs roughly half as much per kilo of steel<\/a>. That gap is not a rounding error; it is the thickness difference showing itself. If a supplier refuses to state door weight in writing, treat the refusal as your first quality signal. A maker who rolls 1.5 mm slats is usually proud to weigh them.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"where-the-price-per-kilo-method-breaks-down\">Where the Price per Kilo Method Breaks Down<\/h2>\n<p>The method has a blind spot exactly where doors get better: insulation. A sectional door with 40 to 50 mm of polyurethane foam between its skins weighs far less per square metre than a solid shutter curtain. Foam density is a small fraction of steel density, so the warmer door looks weaker when judged by the kilo, and the judgement is wrong.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> never compare weight across door families. Ask for the unembossed steel dimension in millimetres, because embossing can make a thin panel read thicker to the eye and even to a casual caliper. Industry debate over gauge labels exists for exactly this reason, so a written millimetre figure beats a gauge name every time.<\/p>\n<p>Then verify it. A micrometer at the panel edge or at a window cutout gives you the skin reading in seconds. One warehouse crew we know measured a 1.12 mm skin behind a drawing marked 1.5 mm, and that discovery reset the negotiation. Steel sheet also carries rolling tolerances, so ask which standard governs the thickness.
