What Makes a Garage Door Hurricane Rated<\/h2>\n

A 9-pound piece of 2×4 lumber fired at 50 feet per second \u2014 roughly 34 mph \u2014 is the projectile behind the large-missile test used for coastal openings. That number comes from the impact protocols referenced across North American hurricane codes. It matters before you compare quotes, because “hurricane rated garage doors” are certified against two separate threats, not one.<\/p>\n

The first threat is steady pressure. ASTM E330 measures how much uniform static air pressure difference a door assembly survives, and labs normally push it to 1.5 times the stated design load. Wind speed zones and door ratings speak different units. Zones are expressed in miles per hour; hurricane rated garage doors are certified in pounds per square foot. ASCE 7 bridges the two by setting a basic wind speed for your site. The design pressure then changes with risk category, exposure, building height, and the area of the opening. Practically, the psf figure belongs on your drawing, not just in a brochure. When the structural engineer issues the design pressure for each opening, that number becomes the acceptance criterion the supplied door must match, report for report.<\/p>\n

How to Match the Rating to Your Project<\/h2>\n

Picture the scene: the reviewer sends back your door schedule with a note that the listed assembly has no pressure rating for the site’s wind zone. The doors are already ordered. Every fix after that point \u2014 re-engineering, re-testing, re-shipping \u2014 lands on the contractor. Matching happens at specification stage, not delivery.<\/p>\n

Start with structure rather than style. Hurricane rated garage doors pair their panels with heavier-gauge tracks, additional brackets, and a stiffer shaft, because the rating lives in the whole assembly.
